An ancient town steeped in mythology, Kurukshetra is most famous as the setting of the 18-day war that is central to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. As per mythology, Pandavas had prayed before Goddess Kali to which this temple is dedicated, before the final day of the battle against the Kauravas. It is also known as a Shakti-Peetha as it is said that the lower limb of Goddess Sati fell at this place.

As per The Padma Purana and Matsya Purana, it is very auspicious to take a dip in the Sarovar during the Solar Eclipse and draw a massive crowd during solar eclipses.
