The Taj Mahal is described as the most extortionate monument ever built for love.  This beautiful renowned architecture was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his beautiful wife Arjumand Bano Begum popularly known as Mumtaz Mahal. It is the final resting place of the queen, splendidly created for her remembrance. Rabindranath Tagore beautifully described the grandeur of this monument as a teardrop on the face of eternity.

This splendid architecture was made with white marble in the typical Mughal style, tons of white marble were lugged from Makrana’s quarries in Rajasthan, red sandstone was brought from Fatehpur Sikri other precious stones were brought from other countries as well, like turquoise from Tibet,  lapis lazuli from Ceylon, carnelian from Baghdad, malachite from Russia etc. Jewellers and master craftsmen flocked to Agra from all over the empire as well as from Baghdad, Samarkand, Kandahar and Constantinople. The monument is properly symmetrical and took almost 22 years (1630-1652) of hard labour and more than 20,000 workers, masons and jewellers to build this monument of love, which has been standing tall for more than 350 years. In 1983, the Taj Mahal was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around 3 million people visit this site every year.
