Surrounded by dense forest and grasslands, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala. This beautiful sanctuary is located in the Idukki district in the state of Kerala, on the banks of the artificial Lake of Periyar. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Resave is one of the oldest protected areas in the country which is spread around 770 square Kilometres. It is home to Indian tigers, elephants, lion-tailed macaques, gaurs, deer, and sambars apart from this 45 species of reptiles, 30 species of snakes, 13 lizard species, and 2 turtle species.  Apart from wildlife, you may also do the boating on the lake.

Periyar Lake is located near Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. It is the main watering source of the sanctuary. This beautiful lake was established with the building of a dam in 1895, this reservoir meanders around the contours of the wooded hills, providing a permanent source of water for the local wildlife. The boats are run by the Forest Department or Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. The best way to explore the reserve is by taking a boat ride on Periyar Lake, where it is possible to easily spot elephants, gaur, and sambar in the hills around the lake. Apart from this, you can also enjoy the Nature walk, covering 4 to 5 kilometers on different routes, which gives the opportunities to spot birds and butterflies and occasionally big animals as well.

Bamboo Grove is an eco-friendly area, where you can stay in Huts made with bamboo along with other materials. This is a very beautiful place surrounded by lush greenery. The months of October and June are the best times to explore Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
