The Land Of Rhino

Assam is blessed with five national parks among them, Kaziranga National Park is one of the most popular national parks, located in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the state of Assam. In 1985, this sanctuary was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is famed for being the last undisturbed habitat of great one-horned rhinoceroses.

Kaziranga National Park is located at the edge of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot and lies in the flood plains of Brahmaputra. Being located at the perfect geographical location the chances of the visibility of diversified species are very high. Kaziranga is a vast expanse of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests which is rich in vast flora and fauna. The sanctuary is spread over 480 square kilometres, it stretches east to west with the Brahmaputra as it’s northern boundary.

Apart from great one-horned rhinoceroses, it is also the home of vast and diverse species such as Indian wild boar, eastern mole, pangolin, Indian gaur, sambar, barking deer, white-browed gibbon, hog deer, capped langur, rhesus macaque, leopard, golden jackal, sloth bear, fishing cat, jungle cat, large Indian civet, small Indian civet, Indian grey mongoose, Bengal fox, orange-bellied Himalayan squirrel, Asiatic black bear etc. The national park is also home to the rare swamp deer and over 70% of the world’s wild buffalo populations. It also sustains over a thousand wild elephants and 450 species of birds.

This area has many villages, fields, and vast track of tea estates. Here you can enjoy the jeep or elephant safari through three routes such as Baghori, Kohora, and Agaratoli. Besides the safaris and bird watching, you may also visit tea plantations and tea factories, you can also visit some amazing villages.

Between November and April is the best time to visit Kaziranga National Park. From June to September, the sanctuary is completely closed and in May and October, this national park is partially open. Guwahati is the nearest railway station or airport, which is located 194 kilometres from Kaziranga National Park. Guwahati airport and railway stations are well connected with all major cities of India. The National Park is well connected via road as well. The main gate of this sanctuary is located on NH-37.
