Mughal Architectures of Agra

Agra, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations of India, is located on the banks of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh. The history of Agra is very vast as it was the commercial centre for centuries, but the city was recognized by Mughal Empire when they made it their home. The Mughals have given us treasures of rich cultural traditions and extraordinary architecture which reflects their love of nature, refinement, and devotion to the art. Although Agra has many magnificent Mughal era architectures, but most popular are the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri, these are also the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

  1. Taj Mahal: -

The Taj Mahal is described as the most magnificent and exorbitant monument ever built for love. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and was dedicated to his beautiful wife Arjumand Bano Begum popularly known as Mumtaz Mahal. It is the final resting place of the queen, splendidly created for her remembrance. Rabindranath Tagore beautifully described the grandeur of this monument as a teardrop on the face of eternity. Taj Mahal was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1983. Around 3 million people visit this site every year.

  1. Agra Fort:-  

It was built by Akbar between 1565 and 1573, it was established alongside the banks of River Yamuna and stretches for a length of almost 2.5 kilometers. The fort is made using beautiful pieces of red sandstone and white marble and the inner area is inlaid with various semi-precious stones. Some of the must-see attractions at Agra Fort are Nagina Masjid which housed the harem, Meena Bazaar, where the ladies shopped, Shah Burj, the royal quarters, Shah Jahan’s Musamman Burj, Diwan–I–-Khas and Hauz–I–Jahangiri. Agra Fort is also listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

 

  1. Fatehpur Sikri:-

It was built during the mid-16th century by Mughal emperor Akbar in an homage to the famous Sufi Saint Salim Chisti. The meaning of Fatehpur Sikri is the city of victory. It is situated 37 kilometers from Agra. Fatehpur Sikri reflects the liberal religious views and interest in art, architecture, and literature of the Mughal emperor Akbar. The complex of monuments contains Jama Masjid, which is one of the largest mosques in India. Salim Chisti’s grave lies near the Jama Masjid and is made from exquisite marble. The must-see attractions are Birbal Bhawan, The tomb of Salim Chisti, Buland Darwaza, and The Palace of Marya Muzzamani.

  1. Tomb  Of Itmad- Ud- Daula:-

It is another major attraction of Agra. It was built by Nur Jahan the wife of Jahangir as a final resting place for her father Mirza Ghiyas-ud-din, who died in 1622. The tomb is built entirely of white marble. Of its unique architectural style and structure, the tomb is also called the “Baby Taj”.

  1. Sikandara or The Tomb of Akbar:-

Akbar died in 1605, but before that, he made his tomb, as was customary then. The tomb was completed by his son Jehangir in 1913 and is all elegant pavilions and chhatris. The Tomb was constructed using deep red sandstone which has been enhanced by using white marble. It has been decorated by using inlaid panels and a black slate which adorns the tomb and the main entry.
