The Queen of the Hills – Mussoorie

With a large variety of flora and fauna, lush green hills, and breathtaking views of Doon Valley and Shivalik, Mussoorie is one of the most popular and beautiful hill stations in India.  The town is also known as the Queen of the Hills. This picturesque town was established by British officers in 1827.  Mussoorie is located in Dehradun district. It is about 35 kilometers from Dehradun, situated at an altitude at the height of 6580 feet above sea level on the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayan range. Gun Hill is the second highest peak in the town it gives magnificent views of the valley along with the stunning view of the Himalayan ranges, you can reach there through a ropeway.  Lal Tibba is the highest point of the town average elevation of about 2005.5 meters above sea level, which offers an excellent view of the snow-capped Himalayas. Mussoorie is also known as the gateway of Gangotri and Yamunotri.

The Central Tibetan Administration of the 14th Dalai Lama was first consecrated in 1959 in Mussoorie before Dharmashala. In 1960 the first Tibetan school was constructed here. Nowadays about 5000 Tibetans live in this region.

The town popular not only for its picturesque view but it is also known as an impotent center of education and business as well such as Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and Indian Police Services. Mall Road is the shopping hub and the very heart of the town of Mussoorie. Running through the town the road is filled with restaurants, game parlours, and shops selling souvenirs of the beautiful town.

Municipal garden is a must-visit place in Mussoorie, foundered during the colonial era. Filled with over 800 species of flowers it is also popularly known as the Botanical Garden of Mussoorie. Jharipani Falls is another important tourist attraction near Mussoorie, located at a distance of 7 KM from the heart of the town. It is an ideal place for picnicking and offers an alluring view of the Doon Valley and beautiful farming fields.

About 4 kilometres of road stretched between Kurli Baazar and Liberty Chowk is known as Camel’s Back Road mostly because it resembles a camel’s hump. Like Mall Road, it is also filled with various restaurants, handicraft shops, souvenir shops, etc.

The tour of Mussoorie is incomplete without visiting Kempty Falls. Mussoorie was used as a retreat by the Britishers who developed this place. Kempty Falls was first brought to the map by a Brit traveller and officer in 1835 and ever since has been extremely popular. The waterfall is located at a height of 4500 km and is used for picnicking, fishing, bathing, and many other leisure activities.

You may also visit Christ Church, It is one of the oldest churches in the entire Himalayan region. The church was built in Gothic architecture back in 1836 by the Britishers.  Don’t miss to visit Gun Hill, which is the second-highest peak of this town and offers a beautiful view of Doon Valley along with the snow-clad peaks of Gangotri, Srikantha, Bandarpunch, and Pithwara.

About the distance of 6 Kilometres end of Mussoorie, one of the most beautiful places is located, which is known as Cloud’s End, The whole area is covered with beautiful flora and fauna and the whole stretch is best for nature walks.

Although Mussoorie is a seasonal destination, from March to June is the best time to visit the town, as it offers an excellent respite from the scorching summer heat.
